Crowds Gather In Appleby. Hundreds watch on as horses are traditionally washed in the water and then ridden bare-back down the shores of the river Eden in an attempt to impress buyers.

The Flashing Lane. One of the main locations for horses to be traded is Long Marton Road where horses are shown off (or ‘flashed’) by trotting up and down at speed.

Fortune Teller and Her Daughter. Traditional Gypsy palm readers are popular at Appleby Horse Fair and set up their stands in the Market Field.

During Appleby Horse Fair, Fair Hill is home to vendors, palm readers, and the ‘Flashing Lane’ and becomes packed with thousands of people.

Drinkers at The Grapes. Old friends and new gather outside the Grapes Pub on Battlebarrow Street as horses are bought and sold.

Horses Are Bought and Sold. Lesha, a Romani Gypsy from Portsmouth, dismounts a horse after test-riding it down Battlebarrow street, she has travelled to Appleby with her parents to buy a new horse.

Appleby Horse Fair

Appleby-in-Westmorland, a small market town in Cumbria, is home to Appleby Horse Fair – the biggest annual gathering of gypsies and travellers in Western Europe. Over one week around 10,000 gypsies, 1000 caravans, and several hundred horse-drawn vehicles make the journey in late August.
